2013 Open City Fellowship Deadline April 8

33830_10150122411586189_7341745_nAre you an emerging journalist? Do you live in or around New York City? Then you should apply for the  2013 Open City Fellowship through the Asian American Writer’s Workshop (AAWW). Open City, an online magazine published by the Asian American Writers’ Workshop, is looking for five new creative nonfiction fellows for the $5,000 Open City Fellowship.

“Past fellows have told me they feel “permission” to pursue the topics and issues they are passionate about, from this fellowship — it lends them credibility and affords them the time and financial support,” says Carolyn Sun, editor of Open City. Sun has seen Open City fellows go on to get published in The Nation, The New York Times and The Atlantic and find positions at media outlets like Al Jazeera and NPR.  Says Sun, “This is definitely a place where writers can become experts’ in an area, and be heard not only on Open City, but all over.”

Open City documents the pulse of metropolitan Asian America as it’s being lived on the streets of New York right now. Open City grants a $5,000 fellowship, career guidance, and publishing opportunities to five creative nonfiction fellows to write and produce both short-form and long-form editorial content on the vibrant immigrant communities of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. The fellowship is covered by The Wall Street Journal and NPR, a collaborative partner with the New Museum and the Museum of Chinese in America.

If you’re an emerging creative nonfiction writer looking for financial support, a place to publish and career mentorship, apply to become an Open City Creative Nonfiction Fellow. The application deadline is April 8th!
