Gurpreet Singh Sarin was eliminated from American Idol Thursday night after the judges’ panel decided his perfomance of James Morrison’s “Nothing Ever Hurt Like You” wasn’t enough to advance to the Top 20.
One of the most interesting parts of Sarin’s appearance on Idol was the brief introduction package that ran before his performance. We see the 22-year-old University of Maryland student with his family, tying his turban and explaining the importance of his faith in his life. It was a nice moment on one of the most-watched shows on American television.
Hopefully Sarin will be able to capitalize on his brief Idol career the way other former contestants have in the past. If this interview with the Daily Beast is any indication, Sarin’s down-to-earth attitude and approach to his music career will serve him well in the future.
However, we won’t miss the “Turbanator” nickname or Mariah Carey asking if he “plays the sitar or anything.” (Sarin plays tabla.)
