We’re always super-excited to come across talented desis in pop music partly because, apart from M.I.A. and Priyanka Chopra’s part-time efforts, representation is still lacking. Amrita “Ami” Dang’s discordant and definitely desi-inspired jams — at the forefront of a new genre that she calls “bollywave” — excite, much like how Samsaya excites.
Vocalist, sitarist and composer/producer Dang offered a taste of bollywave at a TEDxBaltimore talk in 2013:
The Baltimore-based performer has supported Canadian artist Grimes as a back-up vocalist in the past, which in itself is a ringing endorsement.
In Auspices is the latest EP from Dang — and it’s the perfect bollywave primer.
