Remembering the Victims of Oak Creek

oakcreek victimsToday marks one year since a gunman opened fire inside a gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, killing six worshipers. In their moving short film “Oak Creek: In Memoriam,” director Valarie Kaur  and  and her partner Sharat Raju tell the story of the aftermath of the tragedy and celebrate both the lives of the victims and the vibrant community of faith they left behind.

The film begins in total darkness as we hear one of the 911 calls a community member makes as the shooting is going on. Since the shooting, Kaur has developed deep relationships with members of the Oak Creek Sikh community and these ties show through the depth of her reporting.

As Kaur writes on her website, “In the last year, I’ve witnessed the Sikh spirit of Chardi Kala, everlasting hope and optimism, even in suffering. This is the untold story of tragedy.”
