Thanks to a collaboration with South Asian American Digital Archive (SAADA), the only independent non-profit organization working to document, preserve and provide access to the rich history of South Asians in the United States, we’re delighted to share an original image every Monday.
This Monday, “Three Little Maids at Medical School,” featuring Premola Shahane Poona of Bombay at Women’s Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Here is another photo of Ms. Poona.
Says Samip Mallick, SAADA’s executive director, “Beginning in the late 1800s, a number of women from India came to Philadelphia to study medicine at the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania.”
Mallick will be sharing more about this history at the first SAADA Community Forum in Philadelphia on April 4 at the Asian Arts Initiative. To RSVP, click here.
