Check out Dr. Lahiri’s biodata: Many users of the dating app Tinder say they’ve been matched with a “Dr. Mindy Lahiri,” whose name and bio sounds suspiciously familiar. According to Buzzfeed, here’s the text of her profile:
Tiny doctor in a big city looking for love, friendship, or a donut that’s so good it’s spiritual. I’ve got a Reese Witherspoon personality, a Nicki Minaj body, and Frank Sinatra eyes (they turn blue in the summer, I swear). Looking for the Channing Tatum to my “girl from Step Up.” Swipe right if you like a high-powered firecracker of a woman who has it all but only recently figured out her DVR. To see more about me, tune-in to THE MINDY PROJECT this Tuesday at 9:30/8:30c on FOX.
So is this a viral marketing ploy? Probably! It should be noted that The Mindy Project is set to have a Tinder-themed episode later this season. (Buzzfeed)
The fight to save Ali Choudhry from deportation: Ali Choudhry and Matthew Hynd are a gay couple living in Australia who have been together for four years. In fact, they were one of the first gay couples in Queensland to register for a civil union in March 2012 — alas, local authorities would make civil unions invalid 12 weeks later.
The problem is that Choudhry and Hynd are a binational same-sex couple (Choudhry was born in Pakistan and grew up in the United States before eventually moving to Australia). Despite being in a committed relationship, Choudhry was denied a partnership visa and now faces deportation to Pakistan. His supporters say he may face jail time there because of his sexual orientation. This Guardian piece goes into Choudhry’s story in further detail, and an online petition has been started to urge officials to grant Choudhry a visa. (George Takei’s Facebook page)
A “cult motorcycle” wants to go global: The Royal Enfield Bullet is considered to be “the oldest continuously produced motorcycle in the world” and is manufactured in Chennai. Company officials want to take the brand global. (New York Times)
An Indian judge says pre-marital sex is “against religion”: In a ruling Judge Virender Bhat said that an unmarried woman who has sex “must understand that she is engaging in an act which not only is immoral but also against the tenets of every religion.” Ugh. (BBC)
