A condom commercial starring a popular model was pulled from the Pakistani airwaves late last month after it was deemed indecent by government authorities.
The Telegraph reports that the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has asked stations not to play the 50-second spot for Josh Condoms, calling the ad “indecent, immoral and in sheer disregard to our socio-cultural and religious values.”
Supermodel Mathira Mohammed stars in the ad as a new bride who wants to please her husband, as the young couple’s neighbors openly wonder how she ended up with such an ordinary looking husband. (The secret, and the ad’s punchline, is Josh Condoms.) The ad was produced by DKT International, a nonprofit that works to increase access to contraception and reproductive health care around the world.
As Time NewsFeed notes only about 27 percent of Pakistan’s population of 193 million currently have access to birth control.
